Abortive Medication

« Back to Glossary Index

Abortive medications are those that work to stop the Migrainous or cluster headache process and the associated symptoms rather than simply masking symptoms for a short period. Triptans (sumatriptan, rizatriptan, zolmitriptan, naratriptan, eletriptan, almotriptan, frovatriptan, and Treximet), some ergotamine medications (DHE 45, Migranal Nasal Spray), and the Midrin equivalent medications (acetaminophen, isometheptene, dichloralphenazone) are abortive medications.

Abortive medications are used for Migraine attacks, Cluster Headaches, and some Migraine-like headaches such as post-traumatic headache.
